Mama Nikki Estrada Grades 5 & 6 Literacy

Habari Gani!!
Happy 2018 to our Dogon and Bambara Families

I am Mama Nikki Estrada, the literacy facilitator for grade 5 and 6 named after the Dogon and the Bambara people of
West Africa.

Our goal is to continue to work diligently to develop and strengthen our reading and writing skills on a daily basis.

It is essential and expected that our scholars incorporate studying, reading and writing into their daily routine during their homework time outside of the classroom environment. Our scholars MUST be reading at home each night.

Congratulations to the Scholars of Bambara 6B and Dogon 5B for showing OUTSTANDING GROWTH on their recent Star Literacy Assessment!
This shows that the only way to improve reading skills is to READ READ READ!!

It is essential to make reading and writing purposefully. It means that our writing must be connected to real-world issues that bring about social change.
This year we are working with a literacy program called Wit & Wisdom. This is a new program for us at Sankofa. The research has shown it to be a successful program that offers a variety of skills and strategies that are essential for our scholars to have. Many schools who use this program have seen positive growth in their students. We are EXCITED to see the same.

The middle years are critical in the academic lives of our scholars as we continue the arduous work of preparing them for the future.  It is expected that all of our scholars perform at their highest potential.

Our webpage contains resources available to scholars and families. Please visit our 5th and 6th webpage frequently for updates, helpful links, weekly liberation (homework) assignments, projects, etc.

Asante Sana
